Who can use this feature?
Plan: Call Center AI
User type: Admin, User
Krisp works with your calling app by adding two virtual audio devices to your computer: Krisp Microphone and Krisp Speaker. Once your calling app sends audio through these devices, Krisp can process it.
This article explains which Krisp devices each product needs, and how to select them in any calling app, whether it has its own audio settings, has none, or runs in a browser.
Before you start
Complete these steps before configuring your calling app:
- Install the Krisp desktop app on your device.
- In Krisp, select the physical microphone and speaker you use for calls, preferably a USB-wired headset with a dedicated boom microphone.
- Select Krisp Microphone, Krisp Speaker, or both in your calling app. See Which Krisp devices each product needs to check what your setup requires.
- Toggle on relevant features from the app.
Hint
If Krisp Microphone or Krisp Speaker does not appear in your calling app's device list, restart the app.
Which Krisp devices each product needs
Not every product needs both devices. Find the products and features your team uses in the table below, then select the devices listed next to them.
| Devices to select | Products and features that need them |
|---|---|
| Krisp Microphone only | Agent Noise Cancellation, Agent Accent Conversion |
| Krisp Speaker only | Customer Noise Cancellation, Customer Accent Conversion |
| Krisp Microphone and Krisp Speaker | Agent Assist, Speech Analytics, Voice Translation |
Info
If you are not sure which products and features your team has enabled, select both Krisp Microphone and Krisp Speaker.
Set up an app that has audio settings
Most calling apps let you choose your microphone and speaker from their own settings. This applies to that app only and leaves the rest of your computer's audio untouched.
- Open your calling app's audio or sound settings. Depending on the app, this is usually found under Settings >>> Audio, Sound, or Devices.
- Set the microphone to Krisp Microphone, the speaker to Krisp Speaker, or both, based on the table above.
- Save the settings if the app requires it.
- Place a test call and confirm the audio works in both directions.
Set up an app that has no audio settings
Some calling apps do not expose audio settings and use whatever your operating system has set as the default. In that case, set the Krisp devices as your system default.
If your Admin has enforced the Krisp devices as your system default, skip this section. See Settings your Admin may control. Otherwise, follow the steps for your operating system below.
- Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select Sound settings.
- Set Krisp Microphone as the default input device.
- Set Krisp Speaker as the default output device, if your setup requires it.
- Restart your calling app so it picks up the new defaults.
Hint
To use Krisp in one app only, set the devices per app instead of changing your system default:
- Go to Settings >>> System >>> Sound >>> Volume mixer.
- Find your calling app in the list. It has to be running and playing audio to appear.
- Set its input and output devices to the Krisp devices your setup requires.
- Go to System Settings >>> Sound.
- On the Input tab, select Krisp Microphone.
- On the Output tab, select Krisp Speaker, if your setup requires it.
- Restart your calling app so it picks up the new defaults.
Set up a calling app that runs in a browser
If your calling app runs in a browser and has its own audio settings, use those settings. Follow the steps in Set up an app that has audio settings.
If the web app has no audio settings or you want Krisp to be used across any webpage that accesses the input/output device, configure the microphone in your browser instead.
Krisp Speaker cannot be selected at the browser level in any browser. It comes from the web app's own audio settings, or from your system default if the web app has none.
| Browser | How to select Krisp Microphone |
|---|---|
| Google Chrome | Select it at chrome://settings/content/microphone |
| Microsoft Edge | Select it at edge://settings/content/microphone |
| Opera | Select it at opera://settings/content/microphone |
| Mozilla Firefox | No browser-wide setting. Select Krisp Microphone in the permission prompt the first time you start a call on a site, and tick Remember for all cameras and microphones to keep the choice for that site. To change it later, click the permissions icon in the address bar, clear Use the microphone, then refresh the page to get the prompt again. |
| Safari (macOS) | No browser setting. Uses the system default, or select Krisp Microphone in the web app's audio settings. |
Settings your Admin may control
Two team settings change how Krisp behaves in your calling app. Both are managed by your Admin and are not visible from the Krisp app, so check these before troubleshooting your own setup.
Enforced Krisp devices
Your Admin can set Krisp Microphone or Krisp Speaker as the system and communication default device in calling apps. When this is on, you do not need to set your system defaults yourself. See Enforce Krisp devices as system defaults.
Restricted calling apps
Your Admin can restrict individual calling apps from accessing full Krisp functionality. In a restricted app:
- Noise Cancellation continues to work normally.
- Accent Conversion and Voice Translation do not run.
- Transcripts, summaries, and call scoring are not produced.
Important
Restricted apps show no warning or error. Your call audio still sounds clean because Noise Cancellation keeps working, so a restriction looks identical to a correct setup. If Accent Conversion or Voice Translation is not applying in one specific app and your device selection is correct, ask your Admin whether that app is restricted.
Confirm your setup is working
Start a call and check the Krisp desktop app. The device status changes from Not used to Used by followed by the name of your calling app or browser. If it stays on Not used, the app is not sending audio through Krisp.
In such cases, check the following:
- Krisp is selected in the calling app or in your system sound settings.
- The physical microphone and speaker are selected inside the Krisp app.
If the status shows Used by and your audio sounds clean, but Accent Conversion, Voice Translation, or your transcripts are missing, the app is working but the product is not. Ask your Admin whether the app is restricted. See Restricted calling apps.
